Purple and Nine™ is an upcoming 3D animated series that will get girls interested in science and technology (STEM fields for women). Today’s video interviews the actresses about the characters Purple and Nine.
Who are Purple and Nine™?
Hi. I’m Rebecca Rachmany, co-founder and CEO of Gangly Sister. We’ll be coming out with a pilot of Purple and Nine, a new animated series, in a few weeks, and I wanted to give you a bit of a sneak peek, a preview of Purple and Nine, the characters. I’ll be assisted in this video by the actresses themselves, Maya and Liat, who play purple and Nine.
Maya: My name is Maya and I play Purple in Purple and Nine.
Liat: My name is Liat, and I play Nine in Purple and Nine.
Rebecca: Purple and Nine’s characters play off one another. Nine is willing to get out there, solve any problem, do anything. Her motto is “Let’s go!” And if things don’t go the way she wants them, her motto is “Let’s keep going!”
Liat: I think what Nine likes about Purple is that she kind of fits in more. I don’t know if Nine realizes how much she doesn’t fit in the world. But I think she admires, maybe, that Purple is trying to fit in a little, but also being the smart geek and trying to save the world.
Maya: I think that Purple really likes about Nine that Nine kind of says things that Purple doesn’t have the guts to say. Nine, she’s very straightforward. I think Purple, she really likes that quality about Nine, and in some ways she hopes she has it and when she sees that in Nine it really attracts her.
Rebecca: Purple and Nine really came out of our dissatisfaction with the role models we see on TV, and in particular for girl. We come from a technology background. I’m a startup person. We see fewer women in technology fields than we’d like to see. And we believe that starts very young.
How did Purple and Nine Meet?
Liat: Nine’s mom did all these community-sponsored events, and she set up a sidewalk sale. Nine had a booth at the sidewalk sale and Purple’s mom urged her to come to the sidewalk sale, and at the sidewalk sale, Purple was just like, drawn in, to Nine’s booth, which was a booth to try to get people to come help her make a Lunar Lander that would fly to the moon.
Maya: Of course, Purple kind of understood about those kinds of rockets and Lunar Landers, and she was very interested. When she came to the booth and she asked Nine, “What were you doing?” Like, how could she get involved? Nine didn’t really know how to respond. She didn’t know how she was going to get that Lunar Lander. Purple wasn’t impressed.
Liat: I think she was impressed! What kind of seven-year-old is setting up a stand for lunar landing on the moon?
Maya: Yeah, but she didn’t really know anything about Lunar Landers, did she?
Liat: Well, it appeared as if she did.
Maya: Yeah, OK.
Liat: Isn’t that what’s important?
Rebecca: Well, whenever I think about Gangly Sister, I think the way humans think. Humans think about people. I think about Purple and Nine. I think about their personalities and who they are.
